Please join us for a virtual conversation on the current exhibition Chiffon Thomas: The Cavernous featuring the artist and Dr. Alyssa Collins, Assistant Professor of English and African American Studies at the University of South Carolina and the inaugural Huntington Library Octavia E. Butler Fellow.

This conversation will explore the speakers’ shared interest in the literary works of pioneering author Octavia E. Butler, who was the first science fiction writer to be awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant. Dr. Collins will lead the conversation delving into themes she has connected between Butler’s literary works and Thomas’ artwork including embodiment and materiality; ideas of duality, binaries, and hybridity; the built environment; and the possibilities that come from working within a speculative mode.
