Congregation Shir Shalom Welcomes
Yale A Cappella Group
Redhot and Blue Will Perform at Nov. 15 Evening Service
As part of a weekend celebration of popular music standards from the American songbook the weekend of Nov. 15-17, Congregation Shir Shalom of Westchester and Fairfield Counties will welcome a world-class group of talented singers from Yale University.
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, as the centerpiece of its weekly sabbath service, a special program titled “Jazzy Jewish A Cappella” will showcase the unique vocal stylings of Redhot and Blue.
Founded in 1977, Redhot and Blue is known for its unique arrangements and award-winning sound. The ensemble of Yale undergraduates sings all-time favorites without any accompaniment other than their own versatile voices, which can emulate instruments.
The group’s songlist for the evening includes standards such as “Over the Rainbow,” “Birdland,” and “Summertime.”
The Nov. 15 event is part of a continuing series of concerts, coordinated by Shir Shalom Cantor Deborah Katchko-Gray, under the banner of “Spirit and Soul at Shir Shalom.” The events are open to the community.
The series includes a 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, program of musical theater songs by pre-eminent Broadway composers Stephen Sondheim and Stephen Schwartz.
Accompanied by pianist Brian Besterman, soprano Claire Simard, a music educator at Wooster School in Danbury, will perform 10 numbers by the celebrated songwriters.
