Ridgefield is celebrating a golden environmental anniversary this year and a new exhibit highlights the decades-long effort to promote recycling.
Two days before Earth Day, on April 20, 1974, Ridgefield celebrated the official opening of the Ridgefield Recycling Center, one of the first such municipal facilities in the state. Townspeople were early and enthusiastic adopters of recycling: regular collections of recyclable materials had begun several years before the center opened. A 1972 event, The Dump Ball, brought townspeople together to support the creation of a permanent center for recycling.
The Ridgefield Historical Society, Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority and the Town of Ridgefield have created an exhibit in Town Hall opening in February that highlights recycling efforts here over the past 50 years. Visit the exhibit Monday through Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm through April 30, 2024 in the entrance lobby at Ridgefield Town Hall. Throughout April there will be special promotions by the town on ways to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

D.Colabella Fine Arts is proud to present two artists who explore texture and the effects of light, with very different outcomes. Eve Boase creates free flowing pieces with many curves and interactions, while local artist Terrence Mahon explores hard angles, prism-like structures and the role of shadows in the art experience. “We are always mindful of the dynamic between artists when we do a pairing for a show, but this show in particular felt very natural. The way that these two artists’ works come together form a show that examines how we interact with our daily surroundings and how we can find meaning or comfort in the many textures we encounter daily,” said Dee Dee Colabella, owner of D.Colabella Fine Arts.

“Making Monotypes: The Painterly Print” is a new group show at the Ridgefield Library featuring original monotypes by six artists: Scott Bricher (pictured here), Barbara Cover, Joan Macfarlane, Roberta Shea, Mary Terrizzi and Nancy Zarider. Each of these artists has studied with Master Printer Anthony Kirk. The exhibition is on view in the Lower Level Art Gallery through April 29, during regular Library hours.
There will be an artists’ reception on Saturday afternoon, April 6th from 2-4 pm. Join us to meet and greet the artists and enjoy light refreshments!
A monotype is the most painterly method among printmaking techniques. Throughout history, painters have often used monotypes for their preparatory sketches due to their immediacy, mark quality, colorful inks, range of papers and range of values. Because the monotype process is more spontaneous and technically less demanding than traditional printing processes, artists can experiment with new and creative forms on paper.

One week only! Don’t miss your chance to view the American Revolution Experience traveling exhibit at Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center (KTM&HC) this Saturday, April 20 through Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily in the Visitor Center. Admission is free for all! The exhibit, brought to KTM&HC through the local Cannon Ridge Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), details the diverse experiences of a cast of historical characters living during the late 1700s, as Americans fought for their independence from Britain.
The innovative pop-up exhibition, set up in KTM&HC’s Visitor Center, includes display panels and interactive digital kiosks that use storytelling, illustration, technology, and unique artifacts and primary accounts to connect modern audiences with Revolutionary War-era people and places. Created through a collaboration between the American Battlefield Trust and the NSDAR, the exhibit is also made possible by generous matching funds from the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program battlefield interpretation grants. American Revolution Experience helps audiences learn, reflect, and commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence: America250.
The exhibit is on view for free to all audiences for the week leading up to the anniversary of the Battle of Ridgefield: Saturday, April 20 through Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily in the Visitor Center. Registration is not required. Extend your stay on select days by taking a tour of our historic tavern museum – tours run Thursdays through Sundays.
KTM&HC thanks the Cannon Ridge Chapter of NSDAR for securing this exciting opportunity for the museum to host the exhibit during its national tour. For more information about the American Battlefield Trust and on American Revolution Experience, go to www.battlefields.org/ontour. For more information about NSDAR, go to www.dar.org/. Experience the American Revolution by taking a tour down Main Street and meet costumed interpreters who will bring history to life and share their tales from the Battle of Ridgefield on April 27, 1777! On Saturday, April 27, 2024 the Ridgefield Historical Society will host one hour long walking tours at 10:30am, 11:00am, 11:30am, and 12:00pm to commemorate the 247th Anniversary of the Battle of Ridgefield. This was the only inland engagement of the Revolutionary War fought in Connecticut and we will commemorate the courage of a vastly outnumbered Patriot force led by Generals David Wooster, Benedict Arnold, and Gold Selleck Silliman, who confronted a force of 2,000 British troops that had burned Danbury.

As human and environmental health come under a litany of new pressures, our gardens can become sanctuaries. Working at the intersection of nature and culture, gardeners have a unique opportunity to impact biodiversity and help make landscapes more resilient and less dependent on harmful inputs. But first, a shift in perspective is necessary.
In a discussion ranging from historic hedges to wooded wilderness, Toshi Yano, the Director at the Perfect Earth Project, will draw on his experiences as Director of Horticulture at Wethersfield Estate & Garden, as well as his experiences gardening at Stonecrop Gardens and private estates, to discuss the challenges facing our landscapes and some exciting new ideas for stewarding them into the future.

In this class, we will continue where we left off in the first art journaling class. If you have taken Art Journaling for Beginners, or have some experience with mixed media, this course is for you. I will introduce a new technique, tool, or topic in each class, including color and composition.
The idea of Art Journaling is always the same. This is for you. Our main goal is to have fun while learning how far we can go with mixed-media art.
Art Journaling is a wonderful way to explore artistic practice, try new techniques, and get your thoughts and feelings on paper through art. Of course, no words are necessary unless you want to write. Like any journal, this is just for you.

The winner of the Tony, the Grammy and London’s Olivier Award, this huge-hearted Broadway hit features a joyous score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and tells the story of two people with nothing in common – or so they think. Charlie is a factory owner struggling to save his family business. Lola is a fabulous entertainer with a wildly exciting idea. With a little compassion and a lot of understanding, this unexpected pair learns to embrace their differences and finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible.

Returning to the Playhouse stage for the first time in ten years, the Goo Goo Dolls will headline our 2024 Summer Fundraiser! Since their formation in the late eighties, the Goo Goo Dolls have contributed a string of staples to the American songbook, sold over 15 million records worldwide, and achieved nearly a dozen RIAA Platinum and Gold singles combined. As a result, they hold the all-time radio record for “Most Top 10 Singles.”
This Rock n’ Roll Bash will bring back the era of 90’s grunge and alternative rock. Enter our outdoor event space and you will be emersed in a vintage, moody, summer garden party with live music, one-of-a-kind auction items, catered summer fare and signature cocktails. After the party, you will be ushered inside the Playhouse for an exclusive Goo Goo Doll’s performance.
Fronted by Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac, the Goo Goo Dolls have sold over 15 million albums and released 19 Top-10 singles including the massive hits, “Iris,” “Slide,”, “Name” and “Black Balloon”. After a series of sold out shows this past summer, the Ridgefield Playhouse performance will be a one-of-a-kind, intimate experience. This is their only show at a venue of this size in 2024!

Space Between, A Survey of Ten Years is Loie Hollowell’s first museum survey and first museum presentation on the East Coast, which includes paintings and works on paper made over a decade, the debut of new pastel drawings and paintings that incorporate life casts of pregnant breasts and bellies, as well as never before exhibited works on paper from the artist’s archive.
This exhibition tracks the development of Hollowell’s visual language over ten years; a vocabulary that bridges abstraction with figuration, autobiography with art history, and biology with emotion. Orbiting two centuries of pioneering women artists that span generations and movements from Abstraction to Surrealism to 1960s Light and Space art, including Hilma af Klint, Agnes Pelton, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Judy Chicago, Hollowell also cites Neo-Tantric painting as an important influence. Hollowell’s approach always begins with her own body as a guide to appraise seismic issues from sexual freedom to feminism, and reproductive rights and motherhood.
